Abstract The main objective of periodontal treatment is to resolve the inflammatory lesion in periodontal tissues. However, the contemporary goal has become regeneration of the lost attachment apparatus through guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique. In the GTR procedures, various kinds of membranes play important roles. Chitosan, a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is biocompatible, biodegradable, and antimicrobial. It acts as hydrating agent and possesses tissue healing and osteoinducing effect. Chitosan can be easily processed into membranes, gels, nanofibers, beads, nanoparticles, scaffolds. The composite of chitosan including hydroxyapatite is very popular because of the biodegradability and biocompatibility in nature. |
