Abstract

A woman’s ability to space or limit her pregnancies has a direct impact on her health and well-being as well as on the outcome of each pregnancy and on her family health. Family planning is a major factor for child survival and reduction of maternal mortality. The relevance of family planning for saving motherhood and child survival is undeniable. This study aimed to assess family planning knowledge, attitude and practice among 176 married couples who attended to Medical Family Center and all Obstetric Private Clinics in Minet Sandob village, Mansoura. A cross- sectional descriptive study design was adopted to carry out this study. Four tools were used in this study. 1) Interviewing questionnaire to assess personal and general characteristics of couples, 2) Assess knowledge of married couples about family planning methods, 3) Assess practice of married couples about using family planning methods 4) Assess individuals’ attitude toward family planning. The total sample size 176 married couples involved in the study. Proportion allocation technique was used to recruit this study. Results. This study showed that 69.9% of women had poor knowledge regarding family planning methods but their total knowledge 76.1% were higher than their husbands 71%. Most couples had information from television. Only 40.3% of wives, 38.1% of husbands were satisfied with health unit role in providing information about family planning. 57.4% of wives used IUD. Conclusion. Wives had more knowledge about family planning more than their husbands, more couples have information from television, more wives used IUD and more husbands used natural methods. Main reasons for prefer to use family planning methods is more comfortable, long duration of work, in other side reasons rejection of using family planning methods are irregular bleeding, difficult to maintain and control. Recommendations. Increase awareness of married couples about family planning especially husbands. Stress on improving couples’ knowledge and solve obstacles that prevent using of family planning. Improve married couples’ negative attitude regarding family planning. Further study implementing education session about improvement utilization family planning methods.
