Abstract Deep overbite is considered one of the most common malocclusion. Anterior bite plane have been proposed as treatment option to correct deep overbite, yet it is important to study its effect upon correction of deep overbite as well as on muscular activity and TMJ. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the available evidence to answer the research question. A research question in PICO format was formulated, trying to identify the effect of the anterior bite plane on correction of deep overbite. “In growing patients with deep overbite malocclusion, what is the effect of anterior bite plane on the treatment of deep overbite?” Search has been done in five electronic databases; PubMEd, Cochrane, Lilacs, Ovid and Scopus. As well as hand search in some of the major journals of the orthodontic field; AJODO, Angle orthodontics journal, EJO, JCO, KJO, WFO and Clinical Trials.gov. Grey literature search was also performed in the library of the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. The search retrieved 1316 articles. After removal of duplicated, exclusion of irrelevant titles and abstracts, 45 full texts were assessed for satisfaction of eligibility criteria. Three controlled clinical studies met the inclusion criteria for the current search. The three included studies were appraised by Downs and Black assessment tool resulting in high risk of bias.
