Abstract

There is a need to define the major sources of pollution in Egypt, due to its high air pollution load. This research explored using satellite data including MODIS, OMI, and AERONET to investigate the variability in aerosol properties daily from 2012 to 2020. Indeed, several products were examined including AOD, AE, SSA, UVAI and size distribution. Data showed that the high AOD in spring associated with low AE values indicate the presence of course-mode particles that originate from desert dust and/or sea spray. In contrast, the high AOD with high AE in summer and autumn demonstrated the dominance of fine aerosols such as smoke particles from local biomass burning. The observation of a high number of fire incidents over Egypt in Sep., Oct., and Nov. 2018, during the season of rice crop harvesting, showed that these incidents contribute to the presence of autumn aerosols across the country. The AERONET AOD was used to validate the MODIS AOD, providing a high correlation coefficient of r = 0.76.
