Abstract

This study was conducted to study the effect of addition different concentrations (2.5 and 5 %) of basil and thyme leaves as powder and its mixture on biological, biochemical, histological and anti-obesity changes of male albino rats. Study the efficiency of different concentrations of basil and thyme leaves as powder and its mixture for increasing weight loss and improve the lipids profile level. Some physiological characteristics such as (liver functions, kidney functions, body weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency ratio and internal organs weight) in tested albino rats were also measured. Determination of some active compounds (total phenols, total flavonoids, antioxidant activity and identification of phenolic compounds) in basil and thyme leaves as powder using HPLC.
Obesity was induces in normal healthy male albino rats by fed on high fat diet (20% animal lipid) supplemented in the basal diet and used as a positive control group.
Forty eight adult male white albino rats, Sprague Dawley Strain, 10 weeks age, weighing (140±10g) were used in this experiment. All rats were fed on basal diet (casein diet) prepared for 7 consecutive days. After this adaptation period, rats are divided into 8 groups, each group which consists for (28 days) of six rats as follows:
group (1): rats fed on basal diet as negative control.
group (2): Obese rats induced by fed on high fat diet (20% animal lipid) supplemented in the basal diet and used as a positive control group.
group (3): A group infected obese is fed on thyme leaves as powder by 2.5% of the weight of the diet.
group (4): A group infected obese is fed on thyme leaves as powder by 5% of the weight of the diet.
group (5): A group infected obese is fed on basil leaves as powder by 2.5% of the weight of the diet.
group (6): A group infected obese is fed on basil leaves as powder by 5 % of the weight of the diet.
group (7): A group infected obese is fed on mixture of thyme and basil leaves as powder by 2.5% of the weight of the diet.
group (8): A group infected obese is fed on mixture of thyme and basil leaves as powder by 5 % of the weight of the diet.
