Abstract The present study aimed to find out whether there is a difference in seminal folic acid level of infertile men before and after surgical repair of varicocele. It included 50 male patients between the ages of 20 and 49 years who were attended the Andrology Clinic in Suez Canal University. The present study showed that the included patients were aged between 20-49, 100% were married, 58% reside in rural areas whereas 92% and 54%were workers and educated respectively, 42% of patients were smokers. Fifty six percent of the patients reported negative medical history of chronic illnesses, 30% gave history of previous surgical operation, 10% had family history of infertility while 2% had history of operations and family history of infertility. Sperm concentration, progressive motility, normal forms and motile ratio as well as folic acid level demonstrated significant increase post-operative compared with pre-operative data. There were non-significant differences between seminal physical properties before and after operation except pus cells where 32% of participants showed pus cells >10/ml before operation and 16% after the operation with no statistically significant difference (P<0.05). There was significant positive correlation between seminal folic acid level before the operation and sperm concentration, sperm motility, and sperm normal forms versus the significant positive correlation only with sperm concentration (r 0.505), P= 0.0002 and normal forms (r 0.034) P= 0.034 postoperatively. |
