Abstract

Precision in estimation of gestational age (GA) is becoming increasingly demanding as the technology used in ultrasonography continues to evolve. Patient expectations also increase and they expect accurate estimates for the pregnancy plan. Fetal kidney length (FKL) alone or in combination with other biometric data can be used to more accurately estimate GA. A true estimate of gestational age (GA) plays a very important role in the quality of care. Any inaccurate estimate can lead to perinatal morbidity and mortality from iatrogenic preterm or postnatal hazards.[2] Ultrasound measurement of fetal parameters is the basis for precise determination of gestational age and detection of abnormalities of the fetal development. The selection of the most useful single biometric parameters depends on the timing and purpose of the measurement and is affected by various factors, especially in the 2nd and 3rdtrimesters. In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters prediction of (GA) is accomplished by measuring the bi-parietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC) , abdominal circumference (AC) , and femur length (FL). These parameters are only as good as, the quality of the images. Normal biological variation have more effect on these parameters amid the 2nd and 3rd trimester. so, in the second half of pregnancy, the 1st trimester (CRL) is more dependable than these indices as they become –increasingly- non reliable as gestation proceeds .[29] The aim of this study was to evaluate the fetal kidney length as a single indicator used in estimation of GA as accurate as BPD,FL, AC. This study was conducted at the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University. 50 pregnant females were included in this study and ultrasound assessment of fetal kidney length was done then an equation was derived : Gestational age in weeks = 10.377 + 5.075 X Mean kidney length in (cm)
