Abstract

Viral warts are benign proliferations of the skin and mucosa that are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. HPV is a double- stranded DNA virus that has over 120 subtypes.
Many modalities are available for the treatment of genital warts.Destructive therapies and immunomodulators. Destructive techniques such as podophyllin, podophyllotoxin, monochloroacetic/ trichloroacetic/bichloroacetic acid, 5-fluorouracil, bleomycin, retinoids, contact sensitizers, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, and cantharidin, as well as physical modalities, such as surgical excision, lasers, or adhesive/duct tape. Physicians may also use cryotherapy.
This study measured glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase serum levels in patients with external ano-genital warts before and after intra-lesional purified protein derivative injection.
PPD was injected intra-lesionally with 2 weeks interval between each injection. Results were (79.6 %) improvement, with (55.9%) complete removal and (23.7 %) partial clearance. On the other hand, injection was done every 2 weeks for a maximum of 6 injections to maximally induce the immune response.
No serious side effects occurred in patients included in this study, only local reactions at the site on injection in the form of erythema, pain and swelling had occurred. These reactions subsided four days later after injection without any medications.
