Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a chronic hyperglycemic condition resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. DM is also commonly associated with elevated oxidative damage. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the anti- diabetic effect of ginger and Nigella sativa on STZ and NA induced diabetic rats [in a rat model of type2 diabetes (T2D)].
For this purpose, fifty adult male albino rats were randomly allocated into five equal groups as follow:
group I, Control group (Negative control) received 1ml normal saline orally once day by day for 21 days.
group II, diabetic, (+ve control), received a single intraperitoneal STZ injection (55mg/kg b.wt.), 15 minutes after the administration of nicotinamide (110 mg/kg b. wt).
group III, (Diabetic rats treated with metformin)the diabetic rats received a single dose of metformin (100 mg/kg b.wt) by stomach tube for 21 days.
group IV, Diabetic rats treated with ginger, receivedethanolic extract of ginger (200mg/kg b.wt) for 21 days.
