Abstract

In this scientific report, an overview for refinery processes and the application of pumps used in refinery are introduced. The characteristics of centrifugal pump handling viscous liquids will be investigated analytically by Matlab code using the design parameters for a centrifugal oil pump of type KWP KBloc65- 200 after using the loss analysis approach to approximate the characteristics of the standard pompa centrifugal water pump. The loss analysis approach is used to calculate the head (H), efficiency (η) and input power (P) for the impeller geometry for KWP KBloc65- 200 centrifugal pump using industrial oils. A computer code is developed based on represented approach and the results of this approach are compared with experimental results for the same pump. The results show good agreement between analytical and experimental approaches. Correction factors gained from the loss analysis approach at different viscosities proved that there is a good agreement between the loss analysis analytical approach and the correction factors gained from the AHIS correction chart with difference less than 5%. Pumping of oil instead of water for three various Impeller geometries of centrifugal pumps causes rapid increase in the hydraulic losses and skin friction, that results insignificant decrease in the head and efficiency of the pump and significant increase in input power with increase in fluid viscosity. The problems and trouble shooting for centrifugal pump and the reciprocating positive displacement pump used in refinery are introduced.
