Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effect of online extensive reading activities on improving the secondary stage students’ reading and essay writing skills. The study adopted the quasi-experimental design using sixty second year secondary stage students as the study participants. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group which received the online extensive reading activities program and a control group which received the regular classroom activities. Instruments of the current study included a reading skills questionnaire and an essay writing skills questionnaire for determining the reading and essay writing skills necessary for EFL secondary stage students. A reading skills test and an essay writing skills test were used before and after the program for assessing the students’ reading and essay writing skills before and after using the online extensive reading program. Results of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean score of the experimental group and the control group in the post administration of the reading and essay writing skills tests in favor of the experimental group. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean score of the experimental group students on the administration of the reading and essay writing skills tests in favor of the post one. Consequently, the online extensive reading activities program proved to be effective in developing students’ reading and essay writing skills.
