Abstract

Background: The majority of the causes of ocular morbidity were either treatable or preventable. Refractive error among children is a common problem. Nowadays, it is increasing due to use of laptops, TV viewing and computers or mobiles and screening for vision at the time of school admission and periodic eye screening of the students is essential to provide early correction of impaired vision. The aim of the work: this study was aimed to: Estimate prevalence and risk factors of eye problems among primary school children in an Egyptian village (Kafr Al Dabbousi, Sherbin, Dakahlia) Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study with analytic component was carried out in Kafr Al Dabousi, Sherbin, Dakahlia during the period 2016&2017. The target populations were the students in the primary school in the village and subjected to Structured Questionnaire, clinical eye examination and referral. - A questionnaire was designed to collect personal data (including age, gender and questions about ocular diseases), past history of the mother, family history and past history of the student - Screening and examination using slit lamp, autorefractometer and direct ophthalmoscope - Students with ophthalmic morbidities were referred to Ophthalmology Centre, Mansoura University and Sherbin Hospital to confirm diagnosis and subsequent proper management Results: • In our study there was statistically significant association between age, sex, academic year, mother’s job and prevalence of eye problems among school children. It was observed that ocular morbidities were frequent in age group (8-10 years) and in females than males • The refractive error was the most prevalent type of ocular morbidities (11.7%) followed by conjunctivitis (3.3%) and myopia was the higher prevalent of refractive error (3.9%)
