Abstract

Child development is a dynamic process and is often difficult to measure because of its nature and because it is influenced by continuous biomedical and/or sociocultural factors.
Early identification of developmental delay is mandatory as it helps both children and their parents. If parents understand where their children are along developmental pathway, they can tailor their expectations and provide equipment, stimulation, and toys to match the child’s ”readiness” for a particular type of experience at each stage. Early identification allows the family members to feel that they are doing all they can to assist the child and prevent developmental delay.
The aim of the present study was to develop an Arabic version for ″Ages and Stages questionnaire″ for early detection of developmental delay among children aged 2-18months and to assess its psychometric properties which will help in early detection of developmental delay which will lead to early intervention and as a result decrease incidence and prevention of secondary disability, better life for the children with special needs and reduction of its burden on the community and government.
A Cross sectional survey was conducted to achieve the study objectives.
Study setting was:
1. A Family healthcare center (El-seuof family health care center) and a family healthcare unit (Danna family healthcare unit) affiliated to East Medical District in Alexandria were selected to be the study setting of the cross-sectional survey in which the screening for any developmental delay were conducted.
2. Pediatric neurology clinic in Alexandria University Hospital is the referral setting for confirmatory diagnostic procedures for those with suspected developmental delay. Target population was all infants /children and aged from one to 18 months attending the family healthcare center or unit for compulsory vaccination.
The total number of children screened was 600,100 for each age group.
Data was collected using the following tools:
1. Structured self-administered questionnaire: it consists of 2 parts
- Part I:include personal data for infants/children and their parents /caregivers.
- Part II: The translated Arabic version of ASQ3.
The questionnaire was developed through the following steps:
a. Forward & backward translation
b. Pre-testing of the Arabic version: Ten parents for each age group were selected. To assess parents’ opinion regarding the clarity and ease of comprehension of the questions.
