Abstract

Mobile technology is one of the latest technological innovations that can be integrated and applied into medical education. The main uses for mobile devices in Medical Education are Information Management, Communication, and Time Management. Smartphones are one of the fastest-growing sectors in the technology industry, the role of Smartphones in medicine continues to expand as additional uses and applications emerge. The adoption of new technologies in developing students’ study guide at medical schools is a reality today.
Up till this moment no real attempts were made to enter the world of mobile learning and get the best use of this readily available technology that has become part of every person daily routine and already been used as an educational tool in many countries, so the purpose of this study was providing a useful basis for preparing a study guide using mobile application in FOM-SCU that can cope with the new era of innovation in order to enhance students’ learning experience.
The study was descriptive/ quasi-experimental (pretest-posttest) study that included a total of 105 students from the 1st year medical students of FOMSCU and 16 PBL classes tutors and was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University , the study consisted of planning the study guide, adapting it to the mobile application, performing needs assessment, implementing the study guide application and evaluation of the students’ satisfaction regarding the study guide application and the performance of students pre- and post- implementation.
The results of the current study revealed that the majority of participating students (73.4%) used applications that aid them in learning; most of the students (94.3%) stated that Smartphone in medical education is useful. The thematic analysis of the open ended questions in the needs assessment revealed that students described the reasons for having a Smartphone ”in the response of the open ended questions” in four major reasons: Social ”Communication”, Learning, Connectivity ”Internet” and Information gathering.
