Hazardous medical wastes have a great impact on the environment, as a result,
developed countries have paid great attention to wastes management. The lack of
awareness of medical wastes danger has led to a defect in the correct and accurate
application of medical wastes management systems. The problem of hazardous
medical wastes disposal and handling increased in the whole universe as a result of
cultural and industrial development and the increased population; therefore, it is
necessary to study medical wastes management, and the architectural interventions
that can contribute to a better handling. This search aims to study the architectural
interventions that would contribute to better handling of hazardous medical wastes,
using theoretical and field studies. To achieve this goal, the research structure has
been developed to consist of two parts: First Part (theoretical) includes three
chapters, Second Part (applied) includes two chapters.
Chapter One: It highlights the different types of medical wastes and their sources,
health care facilities types producing medical wastes, production rates of medical
wastes in Egypt and some countries around the world, and identifying the
international and local agreements and the governing legislative of hazardous
medical wastes handling.
Chapter Two: The stages of hazardous medical wastes management, the roles of
medical wastes management system participants, and the basic principles to reduce
the costs of medical wastes management.
Chapter Three: The role of the architectural interventions required for safe
handling of hazardous medical wastes in all its stages (sorting, collection,
transport, storage, treatment and final disposal).
Chapter Four: Display the most important results of the field studies that
depended on the personal observation according some field visits to a number of
hospitals (8 hospitals); through which, observations were recorded in a
questionnaire form prepared for this purpose, and defining the stages of safe
handling with hazardous medical wastes in reality .
Chapter Five: the results of the field study were determined based opinion survey
for the various groups dealing with medical wastes including doctors, nursing staff

and workers in medical wastes management. The survey form was later analyzed
and represented in form of graphs and tables linking the various opinions about
each item, and determining the stage of safe handling of hazardous medical wastes
according to the opinions of users.
The research study ended to some recommendations, which can contribute to
achieve the search goals. These recommendations included hazardous medical
wastes management stages, the role of architectural interventions required to safe
dealing with hazardous medical wastes in all its stages, medical staff opinion in the
current procedure of hazardous medical wastes handling, and how to improve it.
