Abstract We present a prospective randomized study which was conducted on 200 consecutive patients who underwent isolated elective first time CABG. The aim of the work was to compare between two specific modalities of myocardial protection using either intermittent antegrade cold blood cardioplegia or warm blood cardioplegia. We assumed that warm blood cardioplegia may be as effective or even superior than the traditional antegrade cold blood cardioplegia in our patient cohort. The patients were randomized into two equal blocks each of which was comprised of 100 patients, and each received one of the two cardioplegic solutions. Our study demonstrated a significant reduction in release of myocardial biomarkers (Troponin I) with the use of intermittent antegrade cold blood cardioplegia. This finding did not significantly reflect on our patient’s clinical outcome which may indicate a similar myocardial protection of both cold and warm blood cardioplegia in primary low risk CABG patients. |
