Abstract

The knee joint among the constituents of the locomotor system was the most susceptible to injuries and osteoarthritis and, thus, clinically it was considered as an extremely important joint in the animal limbs. Therefore, the current work had been achieved to study the gross morphology, light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic structure of the knee joint of adult healthy dogs aiming to be an essential resource for the students and veterinary practitioners who deal with the anatomy of dogs, as a member of the family “Canidae”. The present investigation was carried out on a total number of 30 knee joints obtained from fifteen adult apparently healthy dogs of both sexes with their body weights ranged from 10-15 kg. The study concluded that the dog′s knee joint was a complex synovial joint consisting of the femoropatellar, the bicondylar femorotibial and the proximal tibiofibualr articulations, in addition to the joints especially characteristic to canines which occurred between the femur and the gastrocnemius sesamoid bones as well as the joint between the lateral tibial condyle and the popliteal sesamoid bone. All of the previous articulations were contained within a strong common articular capsule.
