Abstract

The The aim present study was carried out in the Experimental farm of Poultry Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University.
of this study was to investigate and evaluate the effect of supplementing coriander seeds to diet and oral administration of lactobacillus acidophilus or combination of them on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood constituents, histological study of the gut and carcass characteristics of growing rabbit.
Forty Californian rabbits 35 days old with average body weight of 588 ± 34 g. were divided randomly into four groups. The control group was fed stander basal diet. Rabbits in the second group (T1) were fed the same basal diet supplemented with 1.5 % coriander seeds. The third group (T2) were fed the same basal diet with oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus solution 1x109 cuf/kg using gavage. The fourth group were fed the same basal diet with 1.5 % coriander seeds and oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus solution 1x109 cfu/kg using gavage (T3).
The obtained results can be summarized as follows:
Feed Intake
Dietary supplement of coriander seeds tended to increase feed intake, while treatment with either lactobacillus alone or combination of lactobacillus with coriander seeds tended to decrease feed intake of rabbits.
Body weight and daily weight gain
The average body weight (BW) and daily gain (ADG) were improved (p <0.05) with supplement 1.5 % coriander seeds as compared with control group.
Feed conversion ratio
The feed conversion ratio expressed as g DM /g gain of rabbits in all treatment groups were significantly (P< 0.05) improved as compared with control one.
Mortality rate
The inclusion of coriander seeds to rabbit’s diet in T1 group or oral administration of Lactobacillus acidophilus to rabbit’s in T2 group decreased the mortality rate to zero %. While, the combination of both treatments in T3 decreased mortality rate to about 10% compmared to control (20%)
Blood constituents:
• The average values of albumin in blood serum for rabbits oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus solution in T2 group were significantly (P< 0.05) lower than other groups.
• The glucose level tended to be lower by 13.55 % with supplement coriander seeds alone in T1 than control group.
• The serum triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in rabbits received coriander seeds alone (T1) or companied with Lactobacillus acidophilus (T3) than those treated with Lactobacillus acidophilus alone (T2) and control group.
• The serum value of high density Lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL) of rabbits received the coriander seed plus Lactobacillus acidophilus in T3 group was lower (P<0.05) than those received Lactobacillus acidophilus alone (T2) and control group.
• The level of serum low density Lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL) of rabbits fed coriander seed alone in T1 or companied with Lactobacillus acidophilus in T3 was decreased (P<0.05) compared with control group.
• The serum of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in all treatment groups (coriander seed, Lactobacillus acidophilusor their combination increased by about 20 % compared with that of control group.
Hematological parameters
• Dietary supplement of 1.5% coriander seed in T1 and oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus solution in T2 or combination with them in T3 increased numerically total white blood cells WBC’s count by 17.6, 14.2 and 4.1% as compared with control group, respectively.
• The percentage of eosinophil was higher (P˂0.05) in group T2 than T3.
• The percentage of lymphocytes were significantly increased (P˂0.05) and the percentage of neutrophils were decreased (P˂0.05) in all treatment groups as compared with control group.
• The basophiles was increased (P˂0.05) with oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus alone in T2 as compared with other groups.
• The average value of MCH was decreased (P˂0.05) with oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus alone in T2 as compared with control group.
• The rabbits received combination of coriander seed and Lactobacillus acidophilus (T3) had lower (P˂0.05) in MCHC than control group. Moreover, the average value of MPV was lower (P˂0.05) in all treatments groups as compared with control group.
Carcass traits
The results of carcass traits exhibited non-significant differences in most carcass traits between treated groups and control group with exception that of dressing percentage was higher (P<0.05) in rabbits oral administrated with Lactobacillus acidophilus solution (T2) alone than that of control one.
Nutrient digestibility and feeding value
• Supplement of 1.5% coriander seeds improved dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) digestibilities. However, ether extract digestibility of T1 and T2 groups were significantly (P<0.05) lower than those of control and T3 groups, respectively. Crude fiber digestibility of all treatment groups was lower (P< 0.05) than control one.
• The feeding value of diets in terms of total digestible nutrients (TDN) of T1 and control groups was higher (P˂0.05) than T2 group. However, the starch equivalent (SE) of T2 and control groups was increased (P˂0.05) as compared with T1 group.
Bacteriological analysis
Total bacterial and coliform counts of caecal content were not influenced by coriander seeds, Lactobacillus acidophilus or their combination with them.
Histological parameters
• The length of duodenal villi decreased (P˂0.05) with oral administrate of Lactobacillus acidophilus solution alone (T2) or combined with coriander seeds (T3) as compared with T1 and control groups.
• The depth of duodenal crypts was higher (P˂0.05) with supplements coriander seeds alone to rabbits in T1 than control one.
• The length of large intestinal folds was decreased (P˂0.05) in the group of rabbits received the combination of coriander seeds and Lactobacillus acidophilus (T3) as compared with other groups.
Economic efficiency:
The net revenue was markedly improved of rabbits received coriander seeds and Lactobacillus acidophilus solution alone compared with T3 and control groups.
Conclusions
Dietary coriander seeds and/or oral administrate of lactobacillus acidophilus alone may improve growth performance, digestibility, immune response, some blood constituents and economic efficiency of growing rabbits.
