Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the methylation status of progesterone receptor gene in endometriosis. The ultimate objective is to determine any potential role for such receptors as a diagnostic marker for the disease process.
The study were conducted on fifty patients recruited from gynecology clinic of Shatby Maternity Hospital Alexandria university complaining of pain or infertility. On ultrasound examination using 2D ultrasound (mindray) to diagnose endometrioma or pelvic endometriotic nodules. Laparoscopy were done for (25) cases and a biopsy were taken from suspicious endometriotic lesion. The cases were subdivided into 2 groups: group (a): (n=25) diagnosed with any stage of endometriosis. group (b): (n=25) control group: women with no endometriosis. Endometrial biopsy taken from (25) control cases by D&C.
The two groups were subjected to: History, Complete general and local physical examination and Investigation: Laparoscoy for (25) patients and biopsy were taken,Red (red, red-pink, or clear), white (white or yellow-brown), and black (black or black-blue) may be the colour of endometriotic lesions seen during laparoscopy. Smooth blebs on peritoneal surfaces, holes or defects within the peritoneum, flat stellate lesions or smooth-walled brown cysts filled with thick chocolate-appearing liquid may be found. Endometrial biopsy taken from (25) control cases by D&C.
In the present study, table (4) summarize comparison between the two studied groups according to age: twenty five cases ranged in age between 19.0 – 36.0 years with a mean age of 25.44 ± 5.28 years and twenty five controls ranged in age between 19.0 – 36.0 years with a mean age 27.04 ± 4.89 years. There was statistically non-significant difference between the two groups regarding to the mean of age. Table (7) summarizes comparison between the two studied groups according to complain: cases showed 14 (56.0 %) were with Infertility, 11 (44.0 %) were with Pelvic pain and no Cases with Vaginal bleeding. Control showed no Cases with Infertility or Pelvic pain and 25 (100.0 %) were with vaginal bleeding. In the present study, Table (15) summarizes comparison between the two studied groups according to progesterone receptor gene methylation: progesterone receptor gene methylation was 21.05 ± 27.24 in cases and 1.20 ± 0.63 in control. Cases were higher than Control and the difference was statistically significant.
