Abstract This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using a Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) on developing EFL secondary school students’ listening and speaking skills and their self-directed learning.The study adopted the quasi-experimental design with one group pre-posttest. The participants consisted of 20 students of 1st secondary stage at Future Language Schools in Tanta who were taught through the MOOC. Data were collected through using the following instruments: A course topics checklist, a pre-post listening comprehension skills test, a pre-post speaking skills test, a self -directed learning scale (SDLS), a speaking assessment rubric and a student reflection log. Findings of the study revealed that participants’ performance in listening, speaking and self-directed learning was improved significantly. The effect size of the course was found to be high and it was recommended to use MOOCs as an effective technique in teaching EFL skills. Moreover, students revealed positive attitudes towards the course as it helped them develop their skills in an irregular teaching environment. |
