Abstract

Summary
This study was conducted to assess OHRQoL in Egyptian children with non-syndromic CL/P compared with unaffected counterpart and to find if OHRQoL will differ according to the gender and age of the child with CL/P. The study also compared the difference between child’s response and parent’s perception.
A total number of 100 (50 in the study group and 50 in control group) aged (8-15) were selected from the Cleft Care Center at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University and the Outpatient Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University.
After the Participants have been identified by meeting the eligibility criteria, an informed consent was obtained from their caregivers and an informed assent was signed by the participating children themselves.
Participating children were asked to complete the validated Arabic version of COHIP-SF 19 questionnaire. Caregivers of the subjects in the study group were also asked to complete the same questionnaire that was re-worded for them. Data collection was done by one investigator.
The collected data was revised, coded, tabulated and introduced to a PC using Statistical package for Social Science to be processed and analyzed.
According to our results, there was no significant difference regarding gender, age, educational level and occupation of caregiver for both groups. Although the majority of both groups were from Cairo, there was a significant difference respect the residence between the two groups.
The results showed that the overall scores of COHIP questionnaires and its subscales (except oral health subscale) were significantly lower in the study group which means that the oral health status in cleft patients has a negative impact on their QoL.
Our results also showed that there was no significant difference between males and females in the study group in all subscales and overall COHIP.
There was no statistical significant difference between the scores of both age groups in functional well-being subscale, socio-emotional well-being subscale and overall COHIP. This indicates that younger patients were also aware of themselves and their symptoms
Caregivers have significantly reported lower scores than their children have reported for all subscales and overall COHIP.
