Abstract

Performance obstacles may make it difficult for nurses to perform tasks and procedures safely. Aim of study: the present study aimed to examine the relationship between performance obstacles and patient’s safety as perceived by nurses in the selected hospitals in Port-Said city. Subjects and Methods:Design: an analytical cross-sectional study. Setting: study was conducted in all inpatient departments at Port-Said General Hospital and El-Zohour Central Hospital. Subject: it was conducted on 118 staff nurses. Data collection tools included a performance obstacles questionnaire and patient safety tool. Data collection lasted from October 2018 to March 2019. Results: Nurses’ age ranged between 21 and 57 years, median 25.0 years, 28.0% with bachelor. Approximately half of nurses had high perception of total performance obstacles, Slightly less than half had positive attitude and more than half had adequate safety practices. Obstacles were significantly higher in Zohour Hospital, while adequate practice was less. Nurses’ age had significant positive correlations with their scores of obstacles, attitude, and practice. Conclusion :Less than half of the nurses in the study settings have high perception of performance obstacles; their safety practices are better than their attitudes. Recommendation: The study recommends that policymakers deal with the identified performance obstacles. Continuous assessment of the incidence of adverse events is needed.
