Abstract
Objective :Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a valuable technique for the assessment of parotid tumors. This study was designed to investigate the role of advanced MRI in the diagnosis of parotid tumors. Methods: Forty one patients were included in this study, they presented with pain and swelling in the region of the parotid gland. All patients were subjected to diffusionweigheted MRI(DWI) examination and histogram analysis. The histogram parameters used for comparison between the lesions included the mean ADC, maximum ADC, minimum ADC, kurtosis and skewness. The results were statistically analyzed. Results: There was significant difference in mean ADC, skewness between Pleomorphic adenoma& warthin tumors, between Pleomorphic adenoma& malignant tumors and between warthin& malignant tumors (p>0.05) while there was significant difference in ADC min, ADC max only between Pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin and Pleomorphic adenoma, malignant tumors. Finally there was no significant difference in the kurtosis among all groups .Conclusions: MRI remains the gold standard imaging modality for characterization of the parotid tumors. Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) and its derived histogram analysis improve the sensitivity of characterization of parotid tumors.
