Abstract

Objective: The present work aimed to assess the healing potential of Moringa Oleifera leaves aqueous extract on induced labial mucosal ulcer in induced diabetic male albino rats.
Design: Thirty-six male albino rats weighing 150-200g were classified into two main groups 18 animals each. group I (positive control / Untreated diabetic group). group II (Experimental /treated diabetic group). These groups were further subdivided into 3sub-groups (A, B, and C) according to the date of sacrifice (7, 10 and 14 days) respectively. All the animals were subjected to topical application of 50 μl of 100% acetic acid on the labial mucosa of the lower lip to induce oral ulceration. Moringa Oleifera leaves aqueous extract was administered topically in group II. The labial mucosa of all groups were examined histologically and by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measuring expression level of IL-1β. Statistical analysis for the ELISA was performed. Morphometric analysis for ulcer cavity mean width was also performed.
Results: Histological examination revealed complete epithelial regeneration across 7, 10 and 14 days in the Moringa Oleifera treated diabetic group. On the other hand, failure of re-epithelization was detected in the untreated group throughout the whole period of study. Regarding morphometric analysis in group I, the largest ulcer cavity width was observed at day 7, while the smallest was observed at 14 days. On the other hand, complete ulcer closure was observed in group II, thus, no morphometric analysis was performed. Statistical analysis for ELISA results showed highly significant decrease in the

IL-1β expression in Moringa Oleifera treated ulcers as compared to the untreated group at all experimental periods.
Conclusion: Moringa Oleifera leaves aqueous extract accelerated the healing of acetic acid induced labial mucosal ulcers in diabetic induced rats.
