Abstract

This was a prospective comparative study conducted on 80 patients with acute pancreatitis (AP); to evaluate and demonstrate role of Interleukin 6 (IL-6), Interleukin 8 (IL-8) and Beta-2 Microglobulin (B2M) in assessment severity of pancreatitis. Comparative study between the 2 groups revealed:  Non-significant difference as regards age, gender, BMI and etiology of AP (p > 0.05).  Highly significant increase in TLC in SAP group; compared to MAP group; with highly significant statistical difference (p < 0.01).  Highly significant decrease in serum albumin in SAP group; compared to MAP group; with highly significant statistical difference (p = 0.0001).  Highly significant increase in baseline IL-6, IL-8 and B2-microglobulin, in SAP group; compared to MAP group; with highly significant statistical difference (p < 0.01 respectively).  Significant increase in 3rd day IL-6, IL-8 and B2-microglobulin, in SAP group; compared to MAP group; with highly significant statistical difference (p < 0.01 respectively).  Highly significant increase in complications and mortality rate, in SAP group; compared to MAP group; with highly significant statistical difference (p < 0.01 respectively).  After applying (Forward method) and entering some predictor variables; the decrease in serum albumin; had an independent effect on increasing the probability of SAP occurrence; with significant statistical difference (p = 0.0086, OR = 0.0003).  After applying (Forward method) and entering some predictor variables; the increase in serum IL-6; had an independent effect on increasing the probability of SAP occurrence; with significant statistical difference (p = 0.0019, OR = 1.22).
