Abstract

This study proposes a sociolinguistic account on gender variation in the use of language by male and female university students. It aims at determining the effects of explicit educational process for investigating whether the undergraduate students have certain justifications for their language use, and whether their use differs according to their gender. A questionnaire was distributed among the students of the Faculty of Arts at the Department of English. Their age group ranges from 19-21 years old. Data were collected from 27 informants. The sample of the study consists of (11) males and (16) females at the third and fourth year studying at Mansoura university. The study analyzes the data both quantitatively and qualitatively. Data were analyzed in the light of gender differences proposed by Creswell (2003), Heigham & Crocker (2009), Brown (2009), Burns (2009), Yin (2011) and Neuman (2014). The present study aims at investigating gender differences in language use in both English and Arabic discourse. The study aims to highlight the social attitudes of male and female university students which are reflected by their use and selection of words. One of the techniques utilized in the analysis of gender differences in language use by male and female students is the empirical approach which was used mainly to investigate whether or not undergraduate male and female students differ when they use English and Arabic. The questionnaire aimed at gathering information and data to support this research. The study concludes that male and female students use language differently. The differences appear when they use certain vocabulary.
