Abstract

The adrenal gland is a highly dynamic tissue. The essential function of the adrenal cortex is the production of a variety of steroid hormones. In murine, secretion of aldosterone in the adrenal cortex is regulated by the rate-limiting enzyme aldosterone synthase or cyp11b2 gene, which is usually limited to the ZG, under the control of circulating angiotensin II (Ang II) and potassium. On the contrary, the expression of 11β‐hydroxylase (cyp11b1) gene involved in the synthesis of glucocorticoids under the control of pituitary ACTH, is restricted to the ZF. This strict, reciprocal regulation of adrenocortical steroid-synthesizing enzymes is termed functional zonation. Maintenance of adrenal gland structure and function is regulated through the incorporation of extra- and intracellular signals that have only recently started to be defined.
