Abstract

Health-promoting lifestyles are highly predictive of individual health status. A health-promoting lifestyle has been defined as ‘‘a multidimensional pattern of self-initiated actions and perceptions that serve to maintain or enhance the level of wellness, self-actualization and fulfillment of the individual”.
University years represent a critical period that is able to influence the quality of lifestyle and health of individuals during adulthood. University students might adopt mange risk-taking behaviors that usually affect their health later in life.
Medical education is one of the most stressful education contexts in comparison with other high education fields. Medical students are exposed to many academic and nonacademic stressors that might affect their self-esteem, mental health and their lifestyle profile. Moreover, they are specifically expected to play a key role in health promotion in their future career as healthcare providers. Medical students should adopt and practice a healthy lifestyle to enable them to be role models and to influence their clients and community.
The study was conducted to assess health promoting lifestyle among fourth year medical students and its association with their sociodemographic characteristics and academic achievement. Moreover, the study aimed to assess students’ self-efficacy and its relationship with health promoting lifestyle among the studied medical students.
The current cross-sectional study was conducted included 684 fourth year undergraduate medical students at Alexandria Faculty of Medicine during the academic year 2018-2019 (609 from the national program and 75 from the international one).
Data were collected using a self-administrated questionnaire includes sociodemographic characteristics, medical history and educational background as well as their lifestyle practices. They were also asked to fill the General Self-Efficacy scale (GSE) and Health promoting lifestyle profile questionnaire (HPLP II).
