Abstract

Tinnitus is a very common complaint among population , whether hearing impaired or not. It is frequently related to psychological disorders as anxiety or depression, which in turn affects the patient’s way of response to treatments and different rehabilitation programs. This is why the need for a rapid and effective way to diagnosis their presence in tinnitus patients has become of a great importance. Our study provides a modification to an Arabic version of a widely used anxiety scale , the BAI, to suite the Egyptian population, then standardization of the scale by applying on 100 healthy normal adults, then on 30 anxiety patients. The standardized test then introduced to 30 tinnitus patients to exclude their affection with anxiety. We carefully estimated the reliability of this scale by internal consistency and test retest reliability. We estimated the discriminant validity, by comparative assessment of the data gathered from the study and control groups.
The modified arabic version of BAI showed good reliability for the total score, with excellent test retest reliability. Its discriminative ability to differentiate between anxious tinnitus patients and non-anxious ones was excellent.
The modified Arabic version of BAI is a valid and a reliable tool for the primary diagnosis of an associated anxiety among tinnitus patients, and is suitable for use by audio-vestibular physicians in the spacific clinics. Its use is recommended during the routine assessment of tinnitus patients. The modified Arabic version of BAI should be used in further research in other audio-vestibular complaints as vertigo and hearing loss.
