Abstract Premature neonate is a neonate born before 37th week of gestational age. It is true that premature neonates face an increased risk of having one or more complication that will be treated in the neonatal intensive care unit. The neonatal intensive care unit is a health care design for critically or seriously ill neonates who are unable to communicate their needs or who require deliberate, planned observation, and highly skilled nursing care and it is a very special care where physicians and nurses are specialized in premature neonate care. Aim of the study: The present study is a descriptive and aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding the care of premature neonates. Setting: The present study was conducted at the neonatal intensive care unit at Ismailia City (Suez Canal, Al-Amery Hospital, El-tal elkabeer Hospital and Al-kassasine Hospital). Sample: The study sample included 75 nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used; a structured interview questionnaire and an observational checklist. The results: indicated that all of the studied nurses had poor scores of knowledge about premature neonate. In addition the studied nurses had a satisfactory scores regarding the care provided to the premature neonates. Conclusion: The study concluded that there is no statistical relationship between the total scores of nurses’ knowledge and the total scores of nurses’ practices regarding the care of premature neonates. Recommendations: in-services, educational program to update nurses’ knowledge and practices should be conducted and nurses’ practice should be adequately supervised by head nurse and proper feedback should be given to improve the care of the premature neonate. |
