Abstract

Oral health is an integral part of general health; therefore, its disregarding will give rise the negative health and social consequences”. Over the past two decades, increasing levels of tooth decay in children and adolescents has been observed in developing countries compared with developed countries. Little is known about oral health attitudes and behaviors of children from developing countries as comparison with developed countries.So, the objectives of the study are to: assess knowledge, attitude and practice of the studied children regarding oral and dental hygiene in Benha district, Qalubia Governorate.Assess oral and dental hygiene status in the studied group.
This study was conducted on 408 students aged 9 to 11 years from both sexes attending the primary schools at 4th,5th&6th grades of Benha city&both Meet Elattar and Elramla villages at the school year (2018-2019).The tools for data collection and procedure were: Awell designed questionnaire about knowledge, attitude and practice of students. The socioeconomic status scale for health research in Egypt (El-Gilany et al., 2012) (138)was used to identify the socioeconomic status of the children’s families.Clinical examinations performed by adentist where he registered number of carious teeth and number of filled teeth . Examination was done at school clinic with fulfillment of infection control measures during examination. The children who need dental treatment were referred to health insurance clinic related to their residence area (Benha). The data was collected by attending the schools four times weekly for three months during the period of the study.Children were selected from different grades and classes randomly and they were subjected to the following:
1. By help of teacher students were sent socio economic scales to be completed by their care givers.
2. They were subjected to a knowledge, attitude and practice survey questionnaire in the class room on available time (30 minute for each group). which is formed of 32 questions : 10 of them assess child knowledge, 7 of them assess child attitude and 15 question to assess child practice regarding their oral health and dental care. Assessment of participants’ oral health knowledge included items on Source of information, the effects of carious/decayed teeth , effect of sweets and fizzy drinks on the dental health… etc.Items that assessed participants’ attitudes included questions about, importans.
