Abstract Perceived social support refers to how individuals perceive family members, friends and others as sources available to provide material, psychological and overall support during the time of need. At the adolescent stage, an individual faces a lot of pressures and challenges that pose a variety of physical, social and emotional difficulties as a result of changing social and emotional pictures of adolescent students, they become more vulnerable to developing mental health problems. Mental Health problems are a major public health concern due to their high prevalence rates, difficulties related to identification and treatment. Perceived levels of support, love, and care can provide positive experience, better physical and mental health outcomes as well.The study aimed to: Assess the relationship between perceived social support and psychological well-being among adolescents. Subject: A convenience subject of 361adolescents from the four schools who fulfilling the following inclusion criteria was recruited in the study. Their age ranging from 11-18 years old. Design: A descriptive co relational design was utilized in the conduction of this study. Setting: This study was conducted at four schools in Menoufia governorate (one preparatory, one secondary urban and rural schools). Summary 73 The following tools were used to fulfill the aims of the study: Tool (1): structured interview schedule sheet:- It was developed by the researcher to assess the socio-demographic characteristics of the studied subject Tool (2) Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (1988): It was translated and modified by the Tashtoush (2015) into Arabic. It was used for assessing adolescents‟ perception of social support. It was tested again for its content validity and reliability.Tool (3) Psychological wellbeing scale (2006): it was originally developed by Rosemary Abbott. It translated and modified by Al-Jammal (2013). It was used to measure psychological well-being and was tested again for its content validity and reliability.The main findings of the study revealed the following:5. The majority of the studied subject was perceived by moderate social support from their friends.6. More than half of the studied subject had moderate social support.7. The majority of the studied students had mild psychological well-being.8. There was a highly statistically significant positive correlation between perceived social support and psychological well-being.Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested:1. Psycho-educational activities about social support and coping, associated with improving positivist, may be recommended. As Summary 74 positivity that leads to psychological well-being is a new concept and studies on predictive powers are new. 2. Educational seminars and workshops on the role of predicting variables (social support, seeking assistance) for adolescents, parents, teachers, and administrators may be organized. 3. Planning about improving social skills and peer relationships, in terms of searching for and developing resources about social support, may be conducted within individual psychological counseling interventions for developing well-being. 4. Educational programs aimed at empowering adolescents with self- esteem and thus psychological well-being. 5. Designing and implementing a developmental program focused on the development of parents‟ emotional intelligence, with positive effects on the personal development of their adolescents. 6. Training programs for teachers for the development of their social skills to enhance their educational role and positively add to their students. 7. Clinical psychologists, educational psychologists and other professionals working with adolescents should consider formulating intervention methods that empower both the adolescent and his or her parents and caregivers. 8. Implement a program of psycho-pedagogically counseling to the students and to their parents supporting them to enhance educational style. This program should focus on improving the level of perceived social support and all well-bing. 9. Boosters and media should be available about how to improve psychological well-being and social skills in schools. Summary 75 10. Coordination between school administrators and parents in policy performing and planning to help adolescents to enhance their psychological well-being which contributes lately to their success. 11. Develop methods and strategies that encompass social support in the educational facilities. 12. It was recommended to plan and implement an educational program aimed at providing parents with knowledge on the effects of perceived social support on psychological well-being and skills appropriate to the needs and development of their adolescent children. 13. Parents must work to help their children develop healthy social and physical skills from childhood up to all phases of growth. 14. Parents should discuss feelings and emotions with their children and advise them kindly, this increases emotional support. 15. Parents should adopt a good manner to deal with their children to have a positive effect on their psychological well-being, also be a good model for their children to express their emotions healthily and to be able to show sympathy, understand and interact with other people. 16. Continuous assessment, screening and discovery should be done in all schools to determine high-risk students for any psychological problems. 17. Providing an educational program for: Teachers to increase awareness about the needs and problems of adolescents, how to adjust with them and to make an appropriate referral. Summary 76 Adolescents at school to increase their awareness about their needs and problems and how to satisfy their needs and adapt to their problems. Suggested further study: 1. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies investigating how adolescents’ perceived social support change over time at different age points should also be carried out. 2. Future researchers are encouraged to carry out similar research on children, rather than adolescents. It should also be carried out in other countries to determine the external validity of the current result. 3. Further psychological research should be done on perceived social support and psychological well-being at different educational and developmental levels. 4. Replication of this study is recommended with several design changes such as using a large subject size; using randomized selection to achieve appropriate representation of population; and conducting the study on a larger scale to include multicenter. |
