Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of artichoke, curcumin alone or in combination with each other’s on liver damage of CCL4 intoxicatedrats.
The present study was applied on (75) healthy albino rats. They were divided into 5 equal groups each of 15 rats. group (1), negative control group in which rats were administered saline along the experimental periods. group (2), positive control group in which rats were intoxicated orally with CCL4 at dose of 1 ml/kg b.wt twice /week for 6 weeks (50% CCL4 in corn oil). group (3) in which rats orally received curcumin extract at dose of 300 mg/kg b.wt /day for 8 weeks, 2 weeks of them before starting of CCL4 intoxication with the same previous dose and duration as in gp.(2). group (4) in which rats orally received artichoke extract at dose of 200 mg/kg b.wt /day for 8 weeks, 2 weeks of them before CCL4 intoxication with the same previous dose and duration as in gp.(2). group (5) in which rats received a combination of both plants and CCL4 with the same dose and duration of the previous groups.
Blood samples were collected from five rats from each group at the end of 2ndand 6thweek post CCL4 toxicity from retro orbital venous plexus then divided into two parts. The first without anticoagulant for serum separation for biochemical tests and the second was collected on di potassium salt of EDTA for hematological examination. Liver specimens were taken at the end of the 2ndand 6th week post CCL4 in two containers, the first in buffer saline for homogenization for tumor markers and kept in deep freezer at -20ºC while the other in neutral buffered formalin for histopathological examination.
