Abstract

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes, it is an important cause of maternal and fetal complications , morbidity and mortality in pregnancies of women with diabetes. Aim of study: Evaluate the impact of diet and exercise protocol for pregnant diabetic women on pregnancy and labor outcomes. Subject and methods: Quasi experimental Research – design was carried out in this study. Sample size was estimated to be100 women divided into two groups, control group (50 women) and study group (50 women) . This study conducted at the Obstetric and Gynecology department (Antenatal clinics, labor ward) in Suez Canal University Hospital and Maternal , child Health Centers in Ismailia City. Women in study group received 3 sessions, booklet and 2 evaluations, first session in antenatal clinic, the researcher greeting with women then explain the objectives of the program, health education about gestational diabetes, Second session in antenatal clinic, health education about ideal nutritional habits, in third session health education about exercise protocol . Results: The majority of women had a poor knowledge about diet and exercises protocol for pregnant diabetic women , this study found that implication of diet and exercise protocol showed statistical significant improvement in study group regarding pregnancy and labor outcomes post intervention when compared with control group (P= <0.001 ). Conclusion: A majority of pregnant diabetic women had poor level of knowledge about diet and exercise protocol during pregnancy pre intervention . Diet and exercise protocol followed by pregnant diabetic women during pregnancy improved their knowledge and practice and showed positive impact on maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes during pregnancy and labor. Recommendations: Diet and exercise protocol should be provided in all health care ceners as a routine care for diabetic pregnant women.
