Abstract

Summary
Intrauterine fetal growth restriction is an important fetal health problem around the world and is associated with high perinatal mortality and morbidity. 8-10% of perinatal mortality is a consequence of IUGR.
In the absence of effective intrauterine therapies, timing of delivery become crucial when the risk of intrauterine death or irreversible complications of organ function in the context of prolonged pregnancy is greater than the risk of preterm birth. So, Decision for termination and timing of delivery is important to prevent preterm deliveries and on the other hand to prevent exposure of fetus to hypoxic uterine environment.
The sequence of changes that were observed in Doppler parameters in IUGR fetuses can select those fetuses at highest risk for adverse outcome before deterioration occurs. So, new parameters are needed to better document the progression of fetal deterioration.
The aortic isthmus is the only arterial connection between the right ventricle, which supplies mainly the systemic and placental circulations, and the left ventricle, which supplies the cerebral vascular network. So, its blood flow pattern reflects the balance between ventricular output and the relative difference in vascular impedance in either system.
