Abstract

Unintended pregnancy is the pregnancy that occurs when a woman has no desire for more children (unwanted) or when she want to postpone pregnancy (mistimed). A significant proportion of these pregnancies results in abortion and support being women to face several risk factors such as maternal death, malnutrition and mental illness.
Worldwide rates of unintended pregnancies accounted for 44% of all global pregnancies between 2010 and 2014 and it constitutes a rate of 62/1000 women aged 15–44 years.
Egyptian demographic health survey (EDHS) 2014 indicated a faster pace of population increase. (According to the same survey), with a prevalence rate of unintended pregnancy of 16% of pregnancies in the last five years preceding the survey. This percentage is slightly higher than the percentage reported in the 2008 (14%).
The present study was to estimate and conducted to estimate the prevalence of unintended pregnancies among currently pregnant women attending three family health units/centers in a randomly selected health district namely El Agami district in Alexandria. A cross sectional study was conducted to achieve the objectives including 450 pregnant women selected randomly from all pregnant women attended the study settings at the time of the field visits. It was conducted in the period between May to the end of August 2018. Data were collected from the studied women using a pre designed interviewing questionnaire including data about their sociodemographic characteristics, obstetric history, state of pregnancy intention and their contraceptive history.
Data were counted and stated using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 22.0.
