Abstract

This thesis aims at setting a thematic and a technical comparative study between the poetry of the Afro-American Maya Angelou and the Kuwaiti Suad Al-Sabah. It is a very important comparative study, as it bridges the gap between East and West and upholds the cause of women’s rights globally.
This thesis opens with an introduction that paves the way for the reader to understand the upcoming chapters. It is divided into three chapters. Chapter one exposes a theoretical approach to feminism, sexism, and racism and how far sexism and racism are interrelated and connected. It reveals a historical background of the sexual and racial oppression opposed to the Arab and the African American women to prove the common features which exist between East and West historically and literary. Moreover, it discusses themes of challenge, survival and self-confidence in the two poets’ poems. This chapter tackles the poetic devices used in the selected poems in order to highlight the similarities between the two poets.
Chapter two compares Angelou and Al-Sabah’s poems that hold themes of sexism and racism to prove their interrelation. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of sexism and racism on the two poets’ poems. It reveals the literary techniques used in the chosen poems and how far they convey the themes. Chapter three discusses themes of marriage, motherhood, and ingratitude within a feminist frame. This chapter investigates the techniques which the two poets provide to clarify the meaning. It depicts the deep feelings of sorrow and sadness because of losing a child in the two poets’ poems.
The study ends up with a conclusion that summarizes the final findings of the thesis. The research findings indicate that Angelou and Al-Sabah have much in common regarding their poems. They share similar themes, techniques, tenors, and trends. Throughout the outcome similarities, it appears clearly that literature is a single pot, whereas similar patterns are found regardless of different cultures, traditions and social status and this is the core of comparative literature.
