Abstract

Crosslinked Gelatin/chitosan membranes incorporated two different essential oils (cinnamaldehyde and anisaldehyde) with different amounts forming Schiff bases via coupling changing their properties, were developed for antibacterial wound dressing applications using gluteraldehyde crosslinking agent and the study is divided into three main stages. The first stage is physicochemical study, includes physical properties such as water uptake that decreased by incorporating cinnamaldehyde and anisaldehyde in chitosan/gelatin crosslinked membranes and confirmed via increasing contact angel values in addition to the trend of ion exchange capacity is descending with increasing the content of cinnamaldehyde and anisaldehyde. Thermal and mechanical properties have been studied including increasing in rigidity of membranes, reduction of tensile strength and elongation in addition to good thermal stability as examined using TGA and DSC by increasing the substitution with the essential oils. Spectral characterization using UV- visible study and colorimetric measurements illustrated decreasing in transparency and increasing of opacity of the crosslinked chitosan/gelatin membranes by increasing cinnamaldehyde and anisaldehyde content. Furthermore, FT-IR spectral analysis confirm the formation of Schiff bases and crosslinked linkage from the peaks appeared around 1660 Cm-1 for aromatic aldehyde and C-O-C linkage around 1060 Cm-1.
