Abstract

Acne is a common disease of the pilosebaceous unit. Multiple factors contribute in its pathogenesis, resulting in its characteristic clinical features which includes; seborrhea, open and closed comedones, papules, pustules and nodulocystic lesions in its severe form as well as various degrees of scarring.Interleukin-1β is a member of the 11 members of IL-1 cytokine family that are small secreted proteins bind to specific membrane receptors on target cells exerting a wide range of inflammatory responses.IL-1β is first synthesized as biologically inactive pro-IL-1β and then processed into biologically active IL-1β through a caspase-1-dependent proteolysis via activation of inflammasomes. Interleukin -1β has been shown to be a potent inducer of some proinflammatory cytokines in sebocytes, it also exerts some pro-fibrotic effects by inducing TGF-β synthesis, pro-inflammatory cytokines and fibrosis markers release. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible role of immunohistochemical expression of IL-1β in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris and acne scars and to study the relation between IL-1β expression and the clinicopathological parameters.
