Abstract

Pregnancy is a period during which many physiological changes occur to help fetal development, these changes include hormonal, metabolic, hematological and cardiovascular changes that affect body organs including the eye. Because of the high blood flow of the choroid, choroidal thickness may be affected by these physiological changes. Our study measured choroidal thickness in pregnant women using enhanced depth imaging spectral domain OCT, and compared it with choroidal thickness of healthy non pregnant women. our study included 60 eyes of pregnant women and 20 eyes of non pregnant normal women from those attended outpatient ophthalmology clinic in Kafr El-Sheikh University hospital during 2018. Those women were assigned into four groups: group A: 20 eyes of healthy pregnant women during the first trimester.group B: 20 eyes of healthy pregnant women during the second trimester.group C: 20 eyes of healthy pregnant women during the third trimester.group D: 20 eyes of healthy non pregnant women as a control group. Our study showed a significant increase of choroidal thickness during the second trimester. However there was no significant increase of choroidal thickness during the first and third trimester of pregnancy These data favor the idea that during pregnancy, increased choroidal thickness may cause increase vascular permeability, which can explain the relationship between pregnancy and CSR.
