Abstract The number of ESRD patients requiring renal replacement therapy is increasing and hemodialysis is considered the routine renal replacement therapy used in Egypt. Infections are the second leading cause of death among hemodialysis patients. Application of infection control guidelines limits the occurrence of infections which in turn improves safety for hemodialysis patients. The aim of the current study was to assess infection control guidelines’ application and knowledge of health care providers regarding these guidelines in hemodialysis units. A cross sectional study was conducted in six hemodialysis units (three urban and three rural) in EL Mahalla El Kobra city, Gharbia governorate. A pre-designed questionnaire sheet was developed and validated to collect data about socio-demographic and knowledge data of health care providers. Regarding the scoring system for knowledge of the health care providers, each correct answer was given one point and (0) for incorrect one. The total knowledge score was 60 points that was divided into three levels (Poor <50%, Average 50-75 %, Good knowledge >75% of the total knowledge score). Also, observational check lists were used to evaluate application of infection control precautions in the studied hemodialysis units. They were filled by observing health care providers especially at initiation and termination of the hemodialysis session. Data were collected at morning and afternoon shifts. Each unit was visited 3 to 6 times (average 4 times) during data collection phase. Each item in the checklists done correctly was scored (1) and that was not done was scored (0 |
