Abstract

This thesis investigates the differences between subtitling and fansubbing practices arding rendering -verbal codes in modern Egyptian films, especially if it encompasses cultural
references. The main objective of the thesis is to depict whether there are any differences in subtitling or fansubbing Egyptian films when it comes to handling non-verbal codes. The study addresses the problems subtitlers face when dealing with non-verbal codes. Hence, it examines how professional subtitling and fansubbing rendered these modes from Arabic to English. The study applies two of Ferrer-Simo‘s (2005) tools of subtitling on two of the non-verbal channels proposed by Gottleib (1998). The study, as well, has identified strategies adopted by professional subtitlers to tackle these codes in the English subtitles. The data of the research have been collected from four different Egyptian films (two of them are professionally subtitled and the other two are fansubbed). The rationale behind choosing these films, whether professionally subtitled or fansubbed is that they are proposing their perspective of contemporary Egyptian cinema, as well as being viewed by a considerable number of audiences. This research uses a descriptive approach to investigate the subtitling and fansubbing practices when they tackle non-verbal codes. It remains to be said that this study does not claim to give decisive answers to the questions posed by the research, but concludes with some academic implications that will hopefully help subtitlers deal with the problems in question, and aspires to pave the way for further research on the topic and related issues, as well.
