Abstract

This was a comparative study between minimally invasive unilateral laminotomy & the classical laminectomy. The study was conducted on 20 patients who had lumbar canal stenosis where ten patients were operated by unilateral laminotomy while the other ten had the classical laminectomy. Mean age of patients in our study was 52 years. There was a female predominance. The main clinical presentation was claudication pain & the most commonly affected level was L4-5. Unilateral laminotomy group showed less operative time, blood loss & postoperative hospital stay than laminectomy group. VAS score & ODI showed significant improvement in both groups Conclusion & Recommendation the unilateral laminotomy approach used for bilateral neural decompression is an effective technique for treatment of lumbar canal stenosis in comparison to conventional laminectomy approach. The minimal invasive techniques decrease the postoperative pain and disability of the patients as well as decrease hospital stay and thereby treatment costs. Our recommendation is to increase the sample size and increase the follow up period in the future.
