Abstract

Aim of the study: This study aimed to design a health education animated film on unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years. Method: This study was carried out through home visits at Mansoura locality from both urban and rural areas (Mansoura city and El-Baramoun village). The study participants who were included in the study were 100 mothers of under-five children with no special needs and 30 professional experts in the fields of community health nursing, public health medicine, pediatric medicine, and animation design. Seven tools were developed by the researcher after reviewing the relevant literature for collection of data and designing of the health education animated film; First: to assess mothers and their under-five children socio-demographic and economic characteristics. Second: to assess home environment. Third: to assess mothers’ knowledge regarding unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years. Fourth: to assess mothers’ subjective practice regarding unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years. Fifth: to assess mothers’ attitude regarding unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years. Sixth: for experts’ evaluation of the designed health education animated film. Seventh: for mothers’ evaluation of the designed health education animated film. Results: The main findings of this study had been summarized as follows: All mothers of under-five children showed a poor score level of knowledge about domestic injuries. In addition, subjective practices about these injuries were improper. It was found that; 79 and 72 of the studied mothers disagreed that domestic injuries were an economic burden on the family and society, and that many children were subjected to many domestic injuries due to parental neglect. Regarding the negative attitude, 84 mothers agreed that as the child develops his or her ability to grow and move, the incidence of domestic injuries increase. All experts agreed on the following: The importance of the domestic injuries’ topic for the target group and society as a whole, the design of the health education animated film was clear and facilitates the movement within it, providing information using a new and different educational media to achieve the principle of individual differences and also the content of the film was presented in an organized, clear and attractive way. All mothers indicated that the possibility of display the film without any additional programs or special requirements, as well as the used language was clear and appropriate for their age and educational level.Recommendations:The following recommendations have been suggested: Evaluate the effectiveness of the designed health education animated film as a health education media on minimizing the rate of exposure to unintentional patterns of domestic injuries. Further studies are needed to estimate the external validity of the designed health education animated film on unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years to be generalized. Comparative study between the designed health education animated film and other health educational media about unintentional patterns of domestic injuries for children under-five years. Continuous health education and counseling regarding domestic safety and first aid measures for the mothers who have under-five children. The mass media should be involved to increase public awareness about the way to design and arrange the homes to prevent unintentional patterns of domestic injuries.
