Abstract

Menopausal women usually experience a wide variety of disorders principally associated with the cessation of female sexual hormone secretion. Female sexual hormones have important antioxidant effects. Thus menopausal women are liable to oxidative stress and consequently an acceleration of aging process in different tissues.
Menopausal women are at risk to develop many metabolic disorders such as atherogenic changes in lipid profile and insulin resistance. They are also at risk of osteoporosis and loss of bone density.
Hormone replacement therapy is used to overcome the basic symptoms associated with menopause. However, during menopause it revealed an increased risk for breast cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, stroke and venous thromboembolic events.
It was suggested to use different treatments for menopausal women instead of the traditional hormonal replacement therapy. As oxidative stress is proposed to be responsible for many of the menopausal associated disorders, antioxidants may play an important role in the management of menopausal disorders.
The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effects of combined hormone replacement therapy and oral supplementation of vitamin C on some menopausal disorders (oxidative stress, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and osteoporosis) in postmenopausal women.
This study was carried out on 105 menopausal women which were randomly divided into three groups:
group A: included 35 women received two gm of vitamin C (Vitacid C) 2 oral effervescent tablets per day for six months.
group B: included 35 women received combined hormonal replacement therapy oral tablets (Cycloprogynova 2mg) (estradiol valerate, norgesterol)) daily in a cyclic manner for six months.
group C: included 35 women as acontrol group with no medications.
At the beginning of the study all women were subjected to:
 Full history taking and thorough medical and gynecological examination
 BMI AND WHR
 ECG
 DEXA scan to measure bone mineral density.
 Blood samples were collected after 8 hours fasting to measure the following:
- Complete blood picture, liver and renal functions.
- Total lipid profile: total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL.
- HOMA-IR.
- Oxidative stress markers: total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA).
