Abstract Background: Our study suggests that treatment with arthrodesis with retrograde nailing constitutes a safe and effective treatment option for ankle instability in patients with charcotarthropathy. The retrograde intramedullary arthrodesis nail offers stable intramedullary fixation, and its use in this difficult population has been explored. Objective: Patients and Methods: 13 papers included, this is a systematic review article on using a retrograde locked intramedullary nail in management of charcot ankle. The search was conducted by using the database PUBMED, Cochrane library, medscape, direct science and JBJS (Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery) and Google scholar using the following keywords: charcot neuropathy, neuropathic ankle arthrodesis, charcot arthropathy, intramedullay nail fixation, ankle fusion and ankle salvage. Results: 350 Patients were included in our study. Their mean age was (56.93 years). The male to female ratio was (1.63: 1). Total cases of non-union in our study were (11). Total cases of amputation in our study were (22). Total cases of nail removal in our study were (33). Conclusion: Our study confirms that this operative technique is effective and safe with low complications rate |
