Abstract

One of the biggest challenges facing the world today is to provide access to sustainable electricity supply, safe and affordable. Small-hydro hydropower is considered one of the most cost-effective, reliable and clean sources of renewable energy. Egypt has a long river which is considered a very good energy source. Many small hydropower plants can be installed in run-of-river schemes or implemented in existing river infrastructure. Egypt has to make use of its hydropower resources, not only to meet increasing demand but also to reduce the fossil fuels environmental pollution. This thesis investigates the small hydro energy potentiality at selected locations in Delta-Egypt and presents a feasibility study of small hydropower for these locations. The head and water flow rates for these locations are used to find out the hydro energy potential. The annual energy of three different small hydro turbines is calculated for eight selected regions in Delta Egypt. The analysis includes a comparison between energy outputs from the three types of hydro turbines. Furthermore, a MATLAB program is built to calculate the efficiency of the turbines in each site at different heads and water flow rates. A comparison between different turbines types is performed to detect the most suitable type for each site. Full detailed modeling of Small-Hydro Power (SHP) plant connected with a three-phase grid with the necessary control system is presented. The SHP model consists of a Kaplan turbine directly connected to a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) and Power Conditioning System (PCS). The dynamic performance of the proposed control schemes is tested through digital simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results indicate the impact of SHP on the electrical power flow fed to the grid side. A feasibility study of these small hydro projects is performed to assess the Small-Scale Hydro Power Energy Potentiality for the selected Locations. This study includes the capital cost and the operation/maintenance cost for each project to estimate the unit cost of delivered electricity for the projects. Different measures of financial indices are used in this economic study including; Discounted Payback Period (DPP), Net Present Value (NPV) and Benefit-Cost (B/C) ratio.
