Abstract

This research was designed to evaluate the effect of post cataract surgery discharge instructions on reducing eye infection among elderly patients.
The study was carried out at ophthalmology department and follow up was done at the ophthalmology outpatient clinics at Minia University Hospital.
The main findings of the study can be summarized as follows:
•As regards to socio demographic characteristics, the mean age of the studied patients in study and control groups was (63.8 ± 4.2 years and 64.3 ± 4.2 years) respectively; were female 64% and 54% respectively, were married 50%and 72% respectively, living in rural areas 98% and 92% respectively, were illiterate 70% and 82% respectively, weren’t work 76% for study and control group, weren’t smoker 18% for study and control group.
•Current study results represented that, 50% and 54% respectively of the study and control group had chronic diseases, and 16%&30% respectively had previous eye disease.
•Concerning to distribution of the study group regarding to self- care compliance scale, current study findings displayed that, the most of the participants had compliance with the self-care instruction post operatively.
•As regards to distribution of the study and control groups according to presence of eye infection manifestation after cataract surgery, the current study revealed that, statistically significant differences in relation to study group, fewer numbers of them complained of eye infection after cataract surgery than control group at the three observations post operatively
•Findings of the present study revealed that, there were significant correlation between medical data of the patients and their manifestations of eye infection among study and control group at the observations post operatively.
•from these results it could be concluded that; application of post cataract surgery discharge instructions for elderly patients undergoing cataract surgery reflected significant impact on patient’s outcomes, study group had low incidence rate of eye infection compared to control group. In addition the following recommendations are suggested:
A continuous educational and training program for staff nurses planned and offered on regular basis for patients undergoing cataract surgery, including post cataract surgery discharge instructions and home care.
Written Arabic booklets or brochure and posters including post cataract discharge instructions should be available at health care settings and given to elderly patients and their care givers.
Attend educational classes for elderly people about age related changes that affect their vision
Comply with on discharge instructions given by the nurse regard complications prevention and home self-care.
Replication of the current study on a larger probability sample from different geographical areas to achieve generalizable results.
