Abstract Vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency and one of the most common undiagnosed medical conditions in the world. The manifestation of vitamin D deficiency in children is referred to as rickets, and in adults, osteomalacia. The most common cause of this disease is a physiological deficiency in vitamin D. The associated problems include deformed bones. Children with vitamin D deficiency present with bone pain, muscle weakness, bowed legs, rachitic rosary, frontal bossing of the skull, knock-knees, swelling of the ends of long bones, widened wrist and ankle joints, poor growth, delayed or slow motor development, delayed developmental milestones, delayed dentition, fits, and, in severe cases, pathological fractures. Children with life-threatening hypocalcemia may present with convulsions, tetany, and paresthesia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among preschool children in family health units in Birket El Sabaa district. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 162 Preschool children who selected by simple random sampling technique from family health facilities according to the total number of the preschool children in Birket El Sabaa district (96 from Shentina Al Hagar family healthy unit and 66 from family health center), in the period from 1st of April 2018 till March 2019. Exclusion criteria: chronic disease (renal, hepatic or malabsorption syndromes e.g. coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis). Refusal to participate. Intake of VD supplement |
