Abstract

This research was included two series of experiments, each a series consists of three trials (two field experiments and one post-harvest experiment). All trials of the two series were carried out at the Experimental Station Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, Abies, Alexandria, Egypt.
Field experiments of each series were conducted, during the winter seasons of 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, to study physiological response of the growth, bulb yield and its quality of garlic to a) different rates of soil application of nitrogen fertilizer and foliar application of chitosan, b) different rates of foliar application of calcium (as nitrate calcium) and fulvic acid.
The garlic cultivar Sids-40 was used in these experiments. A split – split –plot system in a randomized complete blocks design, with four replications, was used in both experiments.
Two post-harvest experiments were carried out throughout the summer season of 2017 only, to follow up the previous pre-harvest treatment’s effects, of the two field experiments of the winter season of 2016/2017, on the postharvest quality and storability characters of garlic bulbs.
6.1 The First series of Experiments
Two field experiments were carried out during the two successive winter seasons of 2016 /2017 and 2017/2018, to explore the effects of four rates of nitrogen (0, 50, 100 & 150 Kg N fed-1) and four levels of chitosan (0, 1, 2 & 3 ml l-1), as well as their interactions on growth, yield and its quality of garlic bulbs.
Data were recorded of some vegetative growth characters, yield and its components, chemical constituents and post-harvest quality and storability of garlic. The obtained results could be summarized as follows:
6.1.1Vegetative growth characters
Raising the N level up to 150 kg N fed-1 , caused successive and significant increments on the characters plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaves fresh weight, plant fresh weight, nick diameter and dry matter of leaves , in both seasons.
Foliar application of chitosan at rate 3 ml l-1 the vegetative growth characters; plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaves fresh weight, plant fresh weight, nick diameter and dry matter of leaves characters of garlic plants were significantly increased, in the two growing seasons.
